Nursery school welcomes children at the start of compulsory education, which begins at the age of 3. It is organised into three levels:
- petite section (PS, for children aged 3–4)
- moyenne section (MS, for children aged 4–5)
- grande section (GS, for children aged 5–6)
Nursery school is a crucial stage in pupils’ lives for ensuring their academic success. Its main aim is to make children want to go to school to learn, build their confidence and develop their personalities.
It is a school where children learn together and live together. They develop their spoken language skills (French, English and the local language) and begin to discover writing, numbers and other areas of learning. They learn through play, thinking and problem-solving, practising, recalling and memorising.
PS, MS, and GS of preschool make up Cycle 1, or the cycle of early learning; this cycle is organized into 6 areas:
- The development and structuring of spoken and written language
- Acting, expressing oneself and understanding through physical activities
- Acting, expressing oneself and understanding through artistic activities
- Acquiring basic mathematical skills
- Orienting oneself in time and space
- Discovering the world of living things, matter and objects
