Primary school is for children aged 6 to 11. There are 2 cycles, divided into five levels:
Cycle 2, or the basic learning cycle, comprises :
* Preparatory class (CP),
* The second year of elementary school (CE1)
* The third year of elementary school (CE2).
Cycle 3, or consolidation cycle, includes
* The fourth year of elementary school (CM1),
* The fifth year of elementary school (CM2) and the first year of middle school (6ème).

Mastery of the French language and the first elements of mathematics are the primary objectives of primary schools. The skills expected of pupils are set by cycle:
In cycle 2, pupils are introduced to foreign languages, mathematics, discovery of the world, arts (visual arts and musical education), physical education and sports, and moral and civic education.
In cycle 3, pupils consolidate their learning in these areas and discover experimental science, technology, history and geography, art history and literature.
Information and communication technologies are tools that can be used in a variety of school activities, leading to the first level of the Brevet informatique et internet (B2i).

The French education system takes into account the plurality and diversity of each pupil’s aptitudes. As well as reasoning and intellectual reflection, they develop their sense of observation, taste for experimentation, sensitivity, motor skills and creative imagination
The ‘Common core of Knowledge and Skills’ is the set of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to succeed in school, as an individual and as a future citizen. From primary school to the end of compulsory education, pupils gradually acquire the skills and knowledge of this common foundation.
In addition to compulsory schooling, pupils are offered a range of support services, including learning support and refresher courses.
